Manipur literally meaning ‘A jeweled land’ – is nestled deep within a lush green corner of North East India. The state is largely covered with green hills with a valley at the center that is the center of trade and governance of the state. Manipur has been at the center of Asian economic and cultural trade for more than 2000 years. The history of Manipur dates back to almost 3000 BC.
It is birth place of Polo. This is the place where Rajashree Bhagyachandra created the famous Ras Lila, the classical dance of Manipur, out of his enchanting dream by the grace of Lord Krishna.
About Manipur
In recent history, Manipur was one of two major centers of world war II battles in India – the other being Kohima. Among other things, Manipur is famous for being the land where the sport Polo was first played as well as the land where the Indian flag was first unfurled. Manipur’s remarkable history and exquisite culture, its pristine natural beauty and diverse ethnicity, tempts you to come back again and again.

You require at least three days on the ground to make the trip worth your while.
Imphal, the only airport in Manipur is accessible from Kolkata and Guwahati.
What you can do in Manipur
Manipur is a geographically stunning state with hills, forests, green cover, valleys and lakes to name a few. There are some pre-historic caves that are being explored here too – one of the few places in the North East where evidence of early settlements still exist. There are some interesting World War II tours for history and war enthusiasts. Moreh – a border town between India and Myanmar and also the route for most of the international trade in the region is an often visited area.
The rich history of Manipur can be experienced by visits to historic sites in Imphal and the nearby regions.
